Martial: I’ll prove myself at United

Anthony Martial has played down the significance of his world-record transfer fee for a teenager and insists he “won’t feel the pressure” of proving himself for Manchester United.

Martial, 19, became the world’s most expensive teenager when he joined United in a surprise £36million switch from Monaco on deadline day.
That fee could rise to an eye-watering £58million depending on add-ons, including the France striker winning the Ballon d’Or award.
Martial is uncapped at senior international level but, addressing a packed news conference at Clairefontaine ahead of his country’s friendly against Portugal on Friday, admitted his family were a “little nervous” about the money involved.
However, the striker insists he’s more than ready to prove himself a hit at Old Trafford – and hopes to learn from Wayne Rooney.
“I don’t know if I am worth 80m euros but I don’t worry about the sums,” said the Frenchman.
“I’m going there for the football side of things – the price is between the two clubs and I don’t see myself under any pressure.
“My family were really happy for me that I am going to such a big club. They were definitely a bit nervous given my high price but I am going to stay focused on proving my worth.”

Martial has scored 15 goals in 70 appearances for Monaco and linked up with the national side for the first time this week. He scored four times in 12 games for the France Under-21 side.
However, he said he believes his style of football will be suited to the Premier League and does not expect to encounter problems adapting to the English game under new manager Louis van Gaal.
“Since I was young, people have told me I have the right characteristics to play in England. I’m really keen to develop my game in the English league and prove my worth.
“He (van Gaal) asked me my preferred position – I’d prefer to play in the centre. He told me I could play in a number of positions. It’s the coach who decides but whatever position I’ll do the best I can.”
When questioned about claim’s Rooney did not know who he was, Martial added: “”It’s normal he doesn’t know me. I’ve played a lot in Ligue 1 but I’m happy to go there. He’s a big player and next to him I’ll improve my game a lot.”
Martial could make his debut for United against Liverpool in the Premier League on 12 September.
